Camp Bike Fun 2010 Detailed Information
What is Camp Bike Fun?
Camp Bike Fun is an urban adventure day camp where Bikeworks takes kids on adventures throughout Portland each day via bicycle! The goal of the program is to create a safe, healthy, and motivating summer day camp for youth to explore our amazing city and the things that it offers.
Where does the camp go?
Initial trips will be around the neighborhood focusing on ride safety. As strength and riding skills develop, groups will be able to ride further out to other neighborhoods in the local North and Northeast communities and beyond. We will visit places of historical, cultural, and environmental interest. We will look to expose students to other community building projects and organizations in Portland. Trips might include riding to destinations to get a tour like a worker owned cooperative (Alberta Food Coop) or a housing cooperative (Columbia Eco Village), take a class (like tumbling, yoga, Ultimate Frisbee, or drawing), do a service-learning project (like garden with Growing Gardens, or pick fruit with Portland Fruit Tree Project, plant trees with Friends of Trees, or read to younger kids at a local Child Development Center) or just to get exercise, have fun, and build teamwork and friendships within our group. The daily distance for each trip ranges from 2 - 3 miles to 15 - 20 miles as the camp progresses.
Who can participate?
Camp bike fun is for 10 - 15 year old kids. Each two week session allows 20 kids to participate. There will be 2 adult supervisors and 2 adult interns coordinating the camp.
The Bicycle Transportation Alliance has generously provided Camp Bike Fun with bicycles and helmets for those kids who do not have one.
Basic bike skills are required to participate in the camp (that entails being able to ride around the block on their own).
